Emperor Akihito – Age 85
Akihito completes his service as the Emperor of Japan in April 2019, after having begun his reign in the ‘80s. Upon his father’s death in 1989, he took over the Chrysanthemum Throne. The 85-year-old former emperor became the 125th member of the earliest dynasty in line with Japan’s long-standing order of succession. In 2017, the government of Japan passed a bill that would allow Akihito to renounce the throne. It came about due to ailments that Akihito has had, what with his cancer treatment and heart surgery. His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, is next in line to take over the throne in May 2019.
